GameStop won't stock Medal of Honor on U.S. bases

GameStop stores on base at Army & Air Force Exchange Service installations across the world will no longer advertise and will not stock copies of the upcoming first-person shooter Medal of Honor, which includes a multiplayer mode that allows players to take on U.S. soldiers as members of the Taliban.

When asked if the U.S. military requested this action, AAFES spokesperson Judd Anstey said, "No, sir." This decision, Anstey said, comes from the AAFES. "No one requested it. It was a determination made by this entity, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service."

The person ultimately responsible for the decision is Major General Bruce Casella, the commander of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, who said in a statement that "out of respect to those we serve, we will not be stocking this game. We regret any inconvenience this may cause authorized shoppers, but are optimistic that they will understand the sensitivity to the life and death scenarios this product presents as entertainment. As a military command with a retail mission, we serve a very unique customer base that has, or possibly will, witness combat in real life.”

Preorders from a GameStop at an AAFES will be transferred to the nearest off-base GameStop location. The situation grows a little less clear when it comes to used copies of Medal of Honor once a soldier wants to trade in the game at a GameStop on an AAFES installation.

"Since the game's not been released yet, we're still working through those details," Anstey says. "Certainly, this is exclusive to the newest incarnation of the game."

We also contacted GameStop and Medal of Honor publisher EA for comment.
Anstey says that the AAEFS is part of the Department of Defense but that it doesn't receive tax dollars -- revenue comes from sales at its exchanges.

This isn't the first time a product has been made unavailable on military bases. In 1996, Congress passed the Military Honor and Decency Act, which bars the sale of "sexually explicit material." It was challenged on First Amendment grounds, and the U.S. appeals court upheld the law in 2002.

UPDATE: Judd Anstey of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs issued this statement Tuesday, reaffirming the AAFES' decision to not allow on-base GameStops to carry Medal of Honor. "The Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s position concerning stocking the newest Medal of Honor video game remains unchanged as its facilities have no plans to carry the title," Antsey said in the statement.

AAFES Commander Major General Bruce Cassella said in the statement, "Out of respect to those touched by the ongoing, real-life events presented as a game, Exchanges will not be carrying this product. While we regret any inconvenience this may cause, our position is consistent with the direction stated a month ago. I expect the military families who are authorized to shop the Exchange are aware, and understanding, of the decision not to carry this particular offering."

UPDATE 2: In regard to the AAFES' continued stance on not carrying Medal of Honor, EA Senior Public Relations Manager Amanda Taggart says, "We respect AAFES' authority to decide what's best for their customers. EA has not asked for, and does not expect, a change in the Defense Department's decision to restrict the availability of Medal of Honor on bases."

GameStop Celebrates Black Ops Pre-Order Record with Sweepstakes

We are now nearing the holiday season, and as usual, that means another Call of Duty title. This year, Treyarch is behind the warfare with what they are calling the biggest endeavor yet. So much, in fact, that the game now holds the record for being GameStop’s most pre-ordered game of all-time.

According to GameStop, Call of Duty: Black Ops has managed to obtain the highest pre-order count in the history of the company. The previous record lies with last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launch, but Treyarch’s fresh, Cold War-era setting has managed to eclipse those extraordinary numbers nearly four weeks prior to launch.

In celebration of the imminent release of the title, GameStop is holding a Call of Duty: Black Ops Surprize Attack sweepstakes including prizes such as the Prestige Edition, controllers, and more, each of which will be given away in 24-hour intervals. All that is needed to apply is either a receipt of pre-order or an online confirmation code which implies that the sweepstakes is only available to those who have pre-ordered through GameStop.

Analyst: GameStop To Generate Over $200M In Digital Revenues This Year

GameStop will generate more than $200 million in digital-related revenues this year from Xbox Live Arcade/PSN/Wii point card sales, downloadable content, and its Kongregate service, according to estimates from Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian.

Sebastian, who says "digital revenue streams [are] on the cusp of contribution" for the company, believes the retail chain will be able to take advantage of digital opportunities through in-store merchandising, trade-in credits, and a loyalty program to promote its offerings.

He adds that non-console platforms like smartphones are also a focus for GameStop, as they allow the company to "aggregate content across a broad variety of connected devices". The video game retailer recently released a $0.99 iPhone game, Buck and the Coin of Destiny, starring its bunny mascot.

Sebastian also notes that GameStop management predicts "a good holiday ... expects strong demand for the Kinect controller and is also pleased with the launch of Sony’s Move."

Earlier today, Gamestop revealed that pre-orders for CoD: Black Ops are outpacing those for 2009's CoD: Modern Warfare 2, which set a record for the most game reservations ever at GameStop. The chain also named Gran Turismo 5, Fable 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and Medal of Honor as key holiday releases.

GameStop's favorable forecast for the holiday comes in spite of The NPD Group's own prediction that fewer consumers intend to buy video games or video game consoles as gifts for the holidays. In a recent NPD survey, only 15 percent of respondents said they will purchase game presents this holiday, compared to 20 percent in 2009.

Furthermore, GameStop's management expects its free PowerUp loyalty program to "drive higher customer engagement". The PowerUp rewards program allows consumers to earn points from their purchases, which they can trade in for rewards such as iTunes gift cards and PSN/XBL subscriptions, among other benefits.

Sebastian said the program saw a "surprisingly successful pilot", during which 70 percent of new PowerUp customers felt it was an improvement over GameStop's prior loyalty program. A full 60 percent of new members selected the $14.99 paid program, which offers bonuses like a extra discounts and trade-in credits.

GameStop coming to Ottawa -- Strip mall addition possible

ttawa residents soon will have one more option when it comes to purchasing video games.

GameStop is slated to open in the former Domino's location, 333 W. Stevenson Road, which closed in April 2009.

Ottawa Building and Zoning Official Mike Sutfin said GameStop will open late this month or in early November.

GameStop sells new and used games for Nintendo Wii and DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and 3, PSP and home computers. According to its website, GameStop is the world's largest video game retailer with more than 6,100 stores throughout the United States and 17 countries. The nearest GameStop is in Peru, which has two locations.

The number of people the video game retailer will employ is not known, as a GameStop representative was unable to be reached.

Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Boyd Palmer thinks GameStop saw potential in the Ottawa demographic.

"The strip mall is doing well and there's the draw of the Walmart property," Palmer said, also noting the Thursday, Oct. 14, opening of the Goodwill store near the strip mall.

"That's what happens when one store opens. More follow," Palmer said.

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott opened Sept. 7 and Culver's opened in May. The nearby former Ponderosa Steakhouse building is under renovations with hopes of attracting a tenant.

Further growth could be coming to the strip mall. Sutfin said the developer has expressed interest in an addition next to GameStop. Water main and sewer lines can accommodate an addition, Sutfin said.

The History Of GameStop

History

GameStop traces its roots to Babbage's, a small software retailer that started in Dallas, Texas in 1984. The movements that made Babbage's into GameStop started in 1994 with a series of mergers between Babbage's and several other software retailers. The first was with Software Etc. in 1994. A merger with FuncoLand stores (who owned Game Informer magazine) followed in 2000, as well as one with Electronics Boutique in 2005. Internationally, there was a merger with the Gamesworld franchise in Ireland and in the United Kingdom in 2008, and a merger with French-based Micromania.

When Babbages first merged with Software Etc. In 1994 the combined company was named NeoStar Retail, but the two halves continued to operate as if they were separate entities.

The combined management of the newly formed entity developed a classic case of the right hand not knowing what the left was doing. This ultimately caused NeoStar to go into Chapter 11 reorganization in early fall of 1996. At this point the company had approximately 800 stores in the United States. Several potential buyers of NeoStar's assets emerged.

On the last day of the manager's conference there was a special guest during the meeting. Leonard Riggio, the head of Barnes & Noble, announced that he and a group of investors were going to put in place the financing to keep the company afloat, and get new merchandise into the stores in time for Christmas (at this point, the company's creditors were owed so much back revenue that they were no longer shipping anything to NeoStar).

In a personal comment during the address, Riggio stated that he "hated" the name NeoStar Retail, and thought that the merged Babbage's/Software Etc. should have been called Babbage's Etc. He said should his buyout bid be successful that the company would be renamed.

From the potential buyers, the judge desired to accept the offer from the one that would keep the most people working, preserve the most competition and consumer choice, and be the most stable. Ultimately, Riggio's offer was accepted on the day before Thanksgiving. Barnes & Noble, through B. Dalton, was the original owner of Software Etc. A new management team largely composed of former Software Etc. executives and long time associates of Len Riggio was put in place to run Babbage's.

On November 12, 2004, GameStop spun off from Barnes & Noble; at that point the company had approximately 800 stores in the United States. Due to Riggio's involvement, GameStop and Barnes & Noble employees still received employee discounts at each others' stores, despite the companies being completely separate; both companies chose to terminate this arrangement on September 1, 2010.

In October 2009 Leonard Riggio, chairman of the board at Barnes & Noble and director at GameStop sold 2.3 million shares of GameStop for $60.2 million. According to a report from Barron's, via Gamasutra, that sale could be a sign of impending bad financial news for GameStop. The original report draws comparisons to a previous stock sell off by Riggio, prior to a hefty drop in the company's value. Riggio still retains 9.1 million shares in the game retailer.

1996 closures

The day after Thanksgiving 1996 approximately 100 Babbage's and Software Etc. stores closed their doors. The remaining merchandise from these stores was shipped to 100 of the remaining stores that would participate in a massive "going out of business" sale throughout December. These 100 stores would close for the last time on Christmas Eve, and all merchandise left would be shipped back to corporate headquarters by New Year's Eve. The company would be pared back to about 600 of its best performing stores.

Merger with EB Games

On April 18, 2005, GameStop and EB Games announced that they had entered into a "definitive agreement and plan of merger". After shareholders and US regulatory agencies approved the merger, it closed on October 10 of that year with the agreement that the companies would be run separately, but not as they had been in the past. To ease the transition process of the two companies being run as one, it was agreed upon that the two separate entities would not merge operating activities until the new fiscal year which starts February 1; this also included maintaining two separate distribution centers. At the beginning of the following year, operating activities of the two companies was integrated, starting with the realignment of districts and the closure of EB's West Chester, PA corporate office.

Acquisition of Rhino Video Games

On January 4, 2007, GameStop Corp. officially purchased Rhino Video Games from Blockbuster and the stores were renamed GameStop during a remodel period lasting through late Spring 2007.
