GameStop coming to Ottawa -- Strip mall addition possible

ttawa residents soon will have one more option when it comes to purchasing video games.

GameStop is slated to open in the former Domino's location, 333 W. Stevenson Road, which closed in April 2009.

Ottawa Building and Zoning Official Mike Sutfin said GameStop will open late this month or in early November.

GameStop sells new and used games for Nintendo Wii and DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and 3, PSP and home computers. According to its website, GameStop is the world's largest video game retailer with more than 6,100 stores throughout the United States and 17 countries. The nearest GameStop is in Peru, which has two locations.

The number of people the video game retailer will employ is not known, as a GameStop representative was unable to be reached.

Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Boyd Palmer thinks GameStop saw potential in the Ottawa demographic.

"The strip mall is doing well and there's the draw of the Walmart property," Palmer said, also noting the Thursday, Oct. 14, opening of the Goodwill store near the strip mall.

"That's what happens when one store opens. More follow," Palmer said.

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott opened Sept. 7 and Culver's opened in May. The nearby former Ponderosa Steakhouse building is under renovations with hopes of attracting a tenant.

Further growth could be coming to the strip mall. Sutfin said the developer has expressed interest in an addition next to GameStop. Water main and sewer lines can accommodate an addition, Sutfin said.
